Sacramento Courthouse Wedding: Complete Guide

Courthouse wedding ceremony in Sacramento with officiant and happy couple

Why Couples Choose a Courthouse Wedding in Sacramento

Courthouse weddings are on the rise. They are fast, affordable, and just as legally valid as a ceremony at a luxury venue. Many couples in Sacramento, Elk Grove, Roseville, and throughout the region choose the courthouse route because they want to focus on what matters: their commitment to each other.

Whether you are eloping, keeping things simple, or planning a bigger celebration later, a courthouse wedding in Sacramento gives you a legal marriage without the stress of a large event.

Here is everything you need to know to make it happen.

Step 1: Get Your Marriage License

Before any ceremony can take place, you need a marriage license from the Sacramento County Clerk's office.

Where to Apply

The Sacramento County Clerk Recorder's office is located at 600 8th Street, Sacramento, CA 95814. You can also apply at their branch offices.

What to Bring

Both parties must appear in person with:

  • Valid government issued photo ID. Driver's license, state ID, or passport. Must be current and unexpired.
  • Social Security number. You do not need the physical card, but you must know the number.
  • Date and place of birth for both parties.
  • If previously married, the exact date your last marriage ended and the method (divorce, annulment, or death of spouse).

Cost

The marriage license fee in Sacramento County is $90 for a public license or $100 for a confidential license. Cash, check, and credit cards are accepted.

No Waiting Period

California has no waiting period for marriage licenses. You can get your license and have your ceremony on the same day.

License Validity

Your marriage license is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. If you do not have a ceremony within that window, you will need to apply for a new one.

Step 2: Choose Your Ceremony Option

You have two main paths for a courthouse wedding in Sacramento.

Option A: Civil Ceremony at the Clerk's Office

The Sacramento County Clerk's office performs civil ceremonies. These are brief, typically lasting about five minutes. The ceremony includes the legal vows required by California law.

The civil ceremony fee is approximately $35 on top of your license cost. Availability may be limited, so call ahead to confirm scheduling.

You can bring a small number of guests. One witness is legally required. The atmosphere is functional rather than romantic, but many couples love the simplicity.

Option B: Hire a Wedding Officiant

If you want something more personal, you can hire a licensed wedding officiant to perform your ceremony at the courthouse, a park, your home, or any location you choose. This gives you flexibility with your vows, your schedule, and the overall experience.

As a commissioned wedding officiant in California, I perform ceremonies for couples throughout the Sacramento area. I bring warmth and professionalism to every ceremony, whether it is just the two of you or you have a handful of loved ones present.

For couples who speak Spanish or have family members who do, I officiate in both English and Spanish. Bilingual ceremonies ensure everyone present feels included and understands every word.

Step 3: The Ceremony Itself

Legal Requirements

A valid marriage ceremony in California must include:

  • A licensed officiant. This can be a judge, commissioner, priest, minister, rabbi, or any person authorized by law.
  • The exchange of consent. Both parties must declare that they take each other as spouses.
  • At least one witness. California requires at least one witness to sign the marriage license. Having two is common practice.

What to Expect on the Day

If you go with the Clerk's office, expect a short and structured ceremony. You will check in, wait your turn, exchange vows in a small ceremony room, and sign your license. The whole visit takes about 30 to 45 minutes including wait time.

If you hire an officiant like me, we work around your schedule. Morning ceremonies before work. Lunchtime elopements. Weekend celebrations in a Sacramento park. The timeline is yours to set.

Step 4: After the Ceremony

Filing the Marriage License

After the ceremony, the officiant signs the marriage license and returns it to the County Clerk within 10 days. The Clerk's office then records the marriage and issues certified copies.

Getting Certified Copies

You will want at least two or three certified copies of your marriage certificate. These are used to change your name on your driver's license, Social Security card, bank accounts, and other documents. Certified copies cost about $15 each from the Sacramento County Clerk.

Name Change Process

If either spouse plans to change their name, the marriage certificate is your starting document. You will take it to the Social Security Administration first, then the DMV, then your bank and other institutions.

Costs Breakdown for a Sacramento Courthouse Wedding

Item Cost
Marriage license (public) $90
Marriage license (confidential) $100
Civil ceremony at Clerk's office ~$35
Certified copies (each) ~$15
Total (minimum) $125 to $150

Hiring a private officiant adds to the cost but gives you complete control over the ceremony location, timing, and style. Many couples find it well worth the investment for a more personal experience.

Best Locations for a Sacramento Courthouse Wedding

If you hire your own officiant, Sacramento offers beautiful spots for an intimate ceremony:

  • Capitol Park in downtown Sacramento. Gorgeous gardens and the rose garden make a stunning backdrop.
  • Old Sacramento Waterfront. Historic buildings and river views create a memorable setting.
  • McKinley Park in East Sacramento. The rose garden here is a favorite for elopements.
  • Folsom Lake. For couples in Folsom and El Dorado Hills who want a scenic water backdrop.
  • Davis Central Park. A relaxed, tree lined option for couples in Yolo County.

Of course, your ceremony can take place anywhere: your living room, your backyard in Citrus Heights, a restaurant in West Sacramento, or a family member's home in Rancho Cordova. California law does not restrict where a marriage ceremony can be held.

Tips for Planning Your Courthouse Wedding

Book early. If you want a ceremony at the Clerk's office, appointment slots fill up, especially around Valentine's Day and popular wedding dates.

Dress however you want. There is no dress code. Some couples wear jeans. Some wear full wedding attire. Wear whatever makes you feel right.

Bring your own photographer. The Clerk's office allows photos during the ceremony. If you hire a private officiant, you have even more flexibility for photos at your chosen location.

Tell your witness ahead of time. Your witness needs to be present and ready to sign the license. Make sure they know the time and place.

Consider a celebration later. Many couples have their legal ceremony now and plan a reception or larger gathering for a later date. There are no rules about timing.

Bilingual Wedding Ceremonies in Sacramento

Sacramento's communities are beautifully diverse. For couples and families who speak Spanish, having an officiant who can conduct the ceremony in both languages makes the experience meaningful for everyone present.

I officiate bilingual ceremonies in English and Spanish throughout Sacramento, Elk Grove, West Sacramento, Roseville, Woodland, Davis, and the surrounding areas. Whether your abuela needs to understand the vows or you want to honor your heritage, a bilingual ceremony brings everyone together.
