Most couples walking into the Sacramento County Clerk's office for the first time have no idea what the actual ceremony experience involves. The process is quick. It is efficient. And for many people, it is over before they realize it started.

The Day of Your Courthouse Ceremony

Arriving at the Clerk's Office

The Sacramento County Clerk Recorder is located at 600 8th Street, Sacramento, CA 95814. Plan to arrive at least 20 minutes before your scheduled time. Lines can build up, especially on Fridays and around holidays.

Walk in through the main entrance and head to the marriage services window. You will check in and confirm your ceremony appointment. Staff will verify your marriage license is in order before directing you to the ceremony area.

Parking Downtown

Street parking near the courthouse is metered and limited. Your best bet is one of the public garages on 7th Street or 8th Street. Rates run about $2 per hour. The garage at 7th and K Street is a short walk to the building. Give yourself an extra 10 minutes to park and get inside. Downtown Sacramento traffic during business hours can slow you down.

The Ceremony Room

Civil ceremonies at the Clerk's office happen in a small designated room. It is clean and functional. There may be a few chairs for guests, but the space is not designed for large groups. Most ceremony rooms accommodate the couple, the officiant, the witness, and a handful of guests at most.

There are no decorations. No music. No special lighting. If atmosphere matters to you, this is where a private officiant at a separate location makes a real difference.

What the Officiant Says

The civil ceremony follows a standard script required by California law. The officiant will ask both parties to confirm their intent to marry. You will exchange consent, and the officiant will pronounce you legally married. The entire exchange takes about 5 minutes.

There is no room for personal vows, readings, or cultural traditions in the standard courthouse ceremony. The language is legal and direct. It gets the job done, but it does not leave much space for emotion.

Signing the License

After the ceremony, you and your witness sign the marriage license right there. The officiant signs as well. The completed license goes back to the Clerk for official recording. You will receive certified copies by mail within a few weeks.

Witness Requirements

California requires at least one witness over the age of 18 to be present at the ceremony and sign the marriage license. Two witnesses are common but not required for a public license.

Your witness can be anyone: a friend, family member, coworker, or neighbor. They just need valid ID and to physically be in the room during the ceremony. Do not assume you can grab a stranger in the hallway. Have your witness confirmed and ready before the day arrives.

Dress Code at the Sacramento Courthouse

There is none. The County Clerk does not enforce any dress code for civil ceremonies.

That said, most couples dress somewhere between casual and business casual. Some wear jeans and nice tops. Others show up in suits and dresses. A few bring full wedding outfits. You will not be turned away regardless of what you wear. Choose whatever feels right for the two of you.

The courthouse is the most affordable option. But many couples find that the extra investment in a private officiant gives them a ceremony they actually remember. You still get your license from the County Clerk. The only difference is who performs the ceremony and where.
